On 11-12 November 2009 the Kharkiv Human Rights Protection Group, with support of the German Embassy in Ukraine, held a seminar "International Standards in Criminal and Penitentiary Proceedings" for judges of local courts of the Kharkiv Region. The event was held in the premises of the Kharkiv Regional Court of Appeal.

Ivan Lishchyna, a counsel with ENGARDE, participated in the seminar and delivered a presentation entitled "The Right to Fair Trial in Criminal Procedure" regarding the use of Art. 6 of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (right to a fair trial) in the course of administration of criminal justice.

The report raised a considerable interest of the participating judges and was followed by the discussion of a range of inconsistencies between the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights and the Ukrainian legislation. On the whole, the presentation was very well received by the audience as well as by the organizers of the seminar.

Ivan Lishchyna obtained vast experience in application of the Convention provisions while working as a case-lawyer at the Registry of the European Court of Human Rights (Strasbourg, France). As a member of ENGARDE team, Ivan focuses primarily on international arbitration, representing the clients’ interests before the London Court of International Arbitration, International Commercial Arbitration Court at the Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and other arbitral institutions.
